Our world doesn’t stop surprising us, and so here is an astonishing fact from the world geography. if I told you which is the smallest country in the world? your answer is to be Vatican city or Monaco. but believe me your answer is wrong. now you\’ll say what is the right answer. so the right answer is this blog. in this blog you\’ll know the smallest country in the world
when I was kid I learnt that the smallest country in the world is Vatican city
located in Rome, Italy. and it\’s size is 0,17 sq miles and population is 786.
Vatican city Vs Sealand
is 110 times as big as Sealand (0.004 km²)
Now I\’ve seen that this is wrong. the smallest country in the world is is a micro-nation known as Sealand.
The Principality of Sealand lays claim over Roughs Tower, which is an offshore platform, located on North Sea.
Sealand was founded as a sovereign Principality in 1967 in international waters, seven miles off the eastern shores of Britain.Sealand is a self-claimed country in the North Sea approximately 12 km from the coast of Suffolk. Sealand is a structure called Roughs Tower it was built in the sea by the British Royal Navy, and later became Sealand. It is very small. There is only room for 300 people on it. Even though a man named Michael Bates says Sealand is a country, no other country has supported this claim.
it\’s history :
During the Second World War, the British government built several Fortress islands in the North Sea to defend its coasts from German invaders. Some of these forts were built illegally in international waters.
One of these illegal Fortresses, consisting of concrete and steel construction, was the famous Fort Roughs Tower, situated slightly north of the estuary region of the River Thames, on the east coast of the United Kingdom
In contrast to the original plan to locate the tower within the sovereign territory of the UK, this fortress was situated at a distance of approximately 7 nautical miles from the coast. This is more than double the then applicable 3 mile range of territorial waters. To put it briefly, this island was situated in the international waters of the North Sea.
The forts were abandoned in the early 1950’s and, due to their illegal construction in international waters in a time of world crisis, they should have been destroyed, to comply with international law. Except for the aforementioned fortress, similarly located fortresses were subsequently pulled down. The result of this was the portentous uniqueness of the fortress. Fort Roughs Tower, situated on the high seas, had been deserted and abandoned, res derelicta and terra nullius. From a legal point of view, it therefore constituted extra-national territory.
Occupation and establishmentEdit

Roughs Tower was occupied in February and August 1965 by Jack Moore and his daughter Jane, squatting on behalf of the pirate station Wonderful Radio London.
On 2 September 1967, the fort was occupied by Major Paddy Roy Bates, a British subject and pirate radio broadcaster, who ejected a competing group of pirate broadcasters. Bates intended to broadcast his pirate radio station – called Radio Essex –
from the platform. Despite having the necessary equipment, he never began broadcasting.Bates declared the independence of Roughs Tower and deemed it the Principality of Sealand.
In 1968, British workmen entered what Bates claimed to be his territorial waters to service a navigational buoy near the platform. Michael Bates (son of Paddy Roy Bates) tried to scare the workmen off by firing warning shots from the former fort. As Bates was a British subject at the time, he was summoned to court in England on firearms charges following the incident.[17] But as the court ruled that the platform (which Bates was now calling \”Sealand\”) was outside British territorial limits, being beyond the then 3-nautical-mile (6 km) limit of the country\’s waters, the case could not proceed
In 1975, Bates introduced a constitution for Sealand, followed by a national flag, a national anthem, a currency and passports.
Roy Bates died at the age of 91 on 9 October 2012; he had been suffering from Alzheimer\’s disease for several years. He was succeeded by his son Michael.Joan Bates, Roy Bates\’s wife, died in an Essex nursing home at the age of 86 on 10 March 2016
Sealand is not officially recognized by any established sovereign state or UN
Although Sealand is often described as \”world’s smallest country\”, it holds no official recognition from any established sovereign state even when Sealand’s government claims that it was de facto recognized by UK and Germany. The UN Convention on the Law of Sea clearly states that \”Artificial islands, installations and structures do not possess the status of islands. They have no territorial sea of their own, and their presence does not affect the delimitation of the territorial sea, the exclusive economic zone or the continental shelf.”
a country that have their own flag
their own currency ,
their own passport,
and “national” athletes based all over the world
and even a city which is called hm fort rough. and much more. This is truly interesting thing
what you think about Sealand??
